Polemical Housing - The Berkowitz House
Project Location: Research
Instructor(s): Sean Keller + Wiel Arets
Solo Project
Polemical Housing is a course intended to incite exploration of the inherent qualities of the residence as architecture. When approaching a project as intimate and specific as a single family home the architect is able to truly consider how each element reflects the meaning and nature of the whole. By exploring a number of case studies in depth, we strove to uncover these meanings and intentions and explore how the architect can make ideas manifest through even the smallest designs.
The images, taken from various sources, and the original drawings and text below represent an analysis of the polemical aspects of Stephen Holl's Berkowitz House in Martha's vineyard, from it's conception as an homage to the territory of whaling history to it's conclusion as a crumbling, and ultimately demolished, relic.
