The Sensory Pavilion represents an architecture for experiencing nature. Sited in the middle of an alpine lake, 11,000 feet above sea level, it aims to provide a respite for hikers, climbers and backcountry skiers, while also serving to create an experience of contemplation and meditation.
Acting like an architectural diving bell, the pavilion is partially submerged in water and is completely enclosed save for a small triangular entry. Small holes in the rammed earth walls, the result of the ties used to hold the form-work together, permit a twinkling of light to enter, but for the most part the interior is lit by sunlight filtered up through the watery floor. An oculus in the center of the floor allows access for swimming, fishing and otherwise engaging with the water.
High in the mountains, the connection with water and the feeling of submersion make for an unusual experience. The pavilion is an instrument for characterizing an experience of the beautiful alpine lake, and also a repository for capturing the adventurous spirit of it's occupants.
